workshop
As architects we work with material to construct our work. How we make things largely depends on the materials we produce for our constructions. If we openly look again at the source of the material and its production we could see the gestures we recognise as the start of a renewed approach. These gestures could redefine ways of making and constructing: what are the gestures that shapes the environment we inhabit? What is the relation between material and craft? What places of production do we see now, in the past and future? Anne Holtrop will address these points during the presentation of several projects of his work.
The Anne Holtrop Workshop is an intensive program organized by the IESARQ, that involves academic sessions, master classes, assambly an exhibition of the resulted work, considering the conditions and characteristics of the site.
The workshop at Casa Ortega is a hands-on exploration of Material Gesture by work and experiment with the casting of pigmented gypsum into our site. The way the gypsum flows and forms against the boundaries of fragments of garden and architecture, all become aspects that express the change of the material state, and define form of a new architecture.
The collected casts will form a collective mural that we will display at the site.
Site
The workshop will take place in autum 2021 at Casa Ortega, the first residence designed by the architect Luis Barragán, and a prelude to what would one day be his home studio
This former residence is defined by an opulent, almost wild garden that evokes ancient orchards where vegetation has a life of its own. According to photographic documents and descriptions made by Barragán, the garden originally contained larger lawn extensions, which he typically allowed to grow more freely. It is an oasis in the middle of the urban desert that Mexico City has become.
Barragán often called himself a landscape architect because he believed that architects should make “houses into gardens, and gardens into houses.”

After payment of fees, the IESARQ can provide a letter confirming participation in the workshop.
Elegibility
The workshop is open to students as well as professionals worldwide of a wide range of disciplines (architecture, art, design, etc).
Fees
The IESARQ requires a fee of $760 (US dollars) per participant, which includes the material fee.
Fees include a weeklong workshop, the workshop material and access to all masterclasses which will be held during the FAE. Each participant will also get a tote bag and sketch book.
At the end, a Diploma will certificate each participation.
Fees do not include flights or accommodation, but accommodation options can be advised. Students need to bring their own laptops.
